Doris welcomes summit support for local newspapers
Monday, 08 February 2010

Jim Mather MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism is hosting a Scottish Local Newspaper Summit on behalf of the Scottish Government in Glasgow on Friday to bring together representatives from the press and local government to discuss the future of the sector.

Bob Doris MSP, SNP member for Glasgow, said: "I will be attending the Local Newspapers Summit to discuss the changes we need to secure Scottish journalism in the 21st century.

"In holding this Summit, the Scottish Government is demonstrating its commitment to the local news publishing sector.

"Having spoken in the recent newspapers debate in the Scottish Parliament, this summit provides the opportunity for me to meet with all other interested parties to see what we can all do to ensure that our local newspapers have a suitable environment in which to thrive.

"I will be impressing upon Government ministers just how important local Glasgow newspapers are to the local community. As a Glasgow MSP, I find these papers to be an invaluable source of local information.

"I will also be suggesting ways in which public information notices can be maintained within newspapers whilst complimenting the role of the internet in reaching a wider audience and reducing costs."
