Generous Glasgow can make a difference in Haiti - MSP remarks on public appeal
Monday, 18 January 2010

As the extent of the disaster in Haiti becomes apparent, Scottish National Party MSP Bob Doris has urged constituents in Glasgow to consider a donation. The death toll from the earthquake which hit the Caribbean last week (Tuesday 12 Jan) may have claimed as many as 200,000 lives and has caused untold damage to the country’s infrastructure, making aid supplies difficult to transport.

Mr Doris said: "I just want Glasgow folk to know that they can do their bit and that it does make a difference. The horrific scenes on our TVs seem so distant and it can make us feel like there's nothing we can do. That’s not the case. A small donation from a lot of people can go a very long way to helping the Haitians through this horrendous ordeal.

"Glasgow has always responded at times of international need. This should be no different despite the tougher economic times folk are experiencing here.

"There are a number of ways people can give. Payments can be made to the Disasters Emergency Committee on 0370 60 60 900, or online, at the post office or by text message. The DEC oversees the efforts of the UK's aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors, making sure that the collective effort is steered in the right direction.

"The international effort is looking impressive so far. The Scottish Government has so far pledged at least £250,000 as part of the Scottish effort and has offered support to Scottish NGOs involved in the relief effort by seconding administrative staff and making links between NGOs and local authorities, trade unions and business organisations.

"Public generosity is key to providing the best effort we can and I know Glaswegians will do their bit."
